The 2013 Penn State Security Conference will take place on October 28-29, 2013 at the Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus.

DAY ONE (October 28): - Day One will focus on broader, more universal security topics and include topic tracks, tools demos, and networking opportunities.
- Prerequisites: Open to all Penn State staff, faculty, and students.

DAY TWO (October 29): - Day Two presentations will focus on security topics specific to Penn State IT staff.
- Prerequisites: Must be a Penn State IT staff member

Virtual Desktops: what they are and what they are not

In this session John will cover the gotchas, best practices, and things to keep an eye on. He will also cover the progress being made on the ITS virtual desktop service, some of the decisions that have been made for the service, and where it is expected to go.

This presentation will be VMware Horizon View centric, however most of the best practices still apply for other technologies.

Leveraging the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager and Windows Software Update Services
This session will demonstrate the many settings available for delegated administrators that wish to leverage the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) and Windows Software Update Services (WSUS). Both services are provided by ITS. SEPM will be covered in more detail on how to develop a policy, request non-inheritance, and apply those policies through the hierarchy. Discussion will also take place on how administrator accounts are provisioned for these services. WSUS will be briefly covered and demonstrated on how the service functions and what administrators can do to work within the confines of WSUS.

Physical Security at Penn State
Scott is the current Director of Physical Security with the University Police and Public Safety. He will be discussing the role of physical security at Penn State.

Scotty provided us the following mission statement to accompany his presentation:

- To provide professional Physical Security and Life Safety services to The Pennsylvania State University community consistent with the University's mission, culture, and resources in order to facilitate a "Safer and More Secure University". Units charge includes providing in-house Subject Matter Expertise and oversight for overall Physical Security. Implementation includes, but is not limited to, mechanical/electronic access controls, perimeter protection, surveillance, electronic security, mass notification, emergency communications, and life safety measures.

- Serve as the technical and physical security authority for the University, including its Commonwealth locations. Identify vulnerabilities and perform Security Assessments on University facilities; including but not limited to critical infrastructure and security sensitive facilities. Continuously improve University Safety and Security thru the efforts of the Security Assessment Team (S.A.T.). Provide best practice leadership and continue management of S.A.T. alongside the Assistant Director of University Police for Criminal Investigations and Information Services. Direct and manage how, and by what means, physical security is accomplished at the Pennsylvania State University.

- Consult and collaborate with OPP, University Police, customers, and others on a variety of day-to-day security issues including, but not limited to: key controls, suspected security breaches, managing potential security threats, handling suspicious articles, packages, mail, actual criminal incidents, security technology inquiries. These efforts are designed to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities, enhance employee awareness, and improve University best practices in regards to Physical Security. Co-manage role as University Key Controller alongside the Assistant Director of University Police for Criminal Investigations and Information Services.

- Manage Security related specification, design, installation, and commissioning efforts. Provide management, engineering and technical leadership, and maintain Stewardship for, critical Security and Life Safety Maintenance systems deployed at the University. Provide Physical Security consultation services to University community, design professionals, vendors, and maintenance personnel. Provide direct support and leadership to Design & Construction for Security measures required in new construction and renovation projects. Support construction efforts as they relate to University Security and Life Safety. Duties involve working closely with University leaders, facilities personnel, Police Services, design professionals, vendors, and manufacturers.

Taming an IT Security "Wild West"

Four years ago, Penn State Altoona's IT environment, from a security perspective, was "the wild west".  Since joining the campus in 2010 as its first CIO, Joanne Peca has worked to change that.  But she didn't do it alone.  In this presentation and discussion, Joanne will cover the evolution of IT security at Penn State Altoona and the resources – many of which are available across Penn State – and approaches Penn State Altoona used to help make computing at the campus more reliable and secure.
